Every year on 18th March, the world comes together to celebrate Global Recycling Day, a moment to recognise the crucial role recycling plays in preserving our planet. Established in 2018 by the Global Recycling Foundation, this day aims to highlight the importance of treating waste as a valuable resource and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
Why Recycling Matters More Than Ever
The world generates over 2 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste each year, and with increasing consumption, this number is expected to grow. Without proper waste management and recycling initiatives, much of this waste ends up in landfills, oceans, and natural habitats, causing severe environmental damage.
Recycling plays a key role in reducing carbon emissions, conserving natural resources, and protecting biodiversity. According to WRAP UK, recycling just one tonne of paper saves 17 trees, 4,000 kilowatts of energy, and 26,000 litres of water.
The Benefits of Recycling
Recycling offers a wide range of environmental, economic, and social benefits that contribute to a more sustainable world:
Reduces Carbon Emissions
Recycling materials like aluminium, plastic, and paper significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by cutting the energy needed for production. Recycling one tonne of aluminium, for example, saves up to 95% of the energy required to make new aluminium from raw materials.
Conserves Natural Resources
Recycling helps preserve finite resources. For instance, recycling paper reduces deforestation, while recycling metals limits the need for environmentally damaging mining activities. It also decreases water consumption in manufacturing processes.
Prevents Landfill Overflow
Landfills release methane, a potent greenhouse gas. The UK send over 14 million of tonnes of waste to landfill annually. By increasing recycling rates, we divert waste from landfills, reducing environmental harm and extending the lifespan of waste management sites.
Protects Oceans and Wildlife
Every year, over 8 million tonnes of plastic waste enter the ocean. Recycling plastics prevents pollution, safeguards marine ecosystems, and reduces the impact of microplastics on wildlife.
Boosts the Economy and Job Creation
The recycling industry generates thousands of jobs. In the UK, the waste management and recycling sector employs over 147,000 people, supporting green economic growth. By investing in recycling infrastructure, the UK can create even more sustainable job opportunities.
The 7th Resource: Recognising Waste as a Valuable Asset
The Global Recycling Foundation refers to recyclables as the 7th Resource, following water, air, oil, natural gas, coal, and minerals. Recycling ensures that materials like paper, plastic, metal, and glass are given a new life, reducing our reliance on virgin resources and minimising environmental impact.
How the UK is Leading the Way in Recycling
The UK has made significant strides in recycling, but there is still more to be done:
- The UK recycling rate for waste from households was 6% in 2022, with an aim to reach 65% by 2035.
- Over 95% of glass packaging is recycled in the UK.
- The government’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) policy, set to roll out in phases, will ensure that businesses take greater responsibility for the waste they produce.
With upcoming policies like the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), designed to increase plastic bottle recycling rates, the UK is positioning itself as a leader in circular economy practices.
How Businesses and Individuals Can Contribute
Recycling is a collective effort, and everyone can play a part:
- Sort Waste Correctly – Ensure materials are separated correctly to prevent contamination.
- Reduce & Reuse – Before recycling, consider reusing items to extend their lifespan.
- Support Circular Economy Initiatives – Opt for brands and businesses that use sustainable packaging and recycled materials.
- Educate & Advocate – Spread awareness about the benefits of recycling in your community.
- Engage with Local Recycling Schemes – Many councils offer dedicated recycling services for different types of waste.
Bywaters’ Commitment to Recycling
At Bywaters, we are committed to helping businesses and communities improve their recycling rates and reduce waste. Through our state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in London, we process thousands of tonnes of recyclables every year, ensuring that valuable materials are reintroduced into the economy rather than sent to landfill.
By partnering with businesses, councils, and organisations, we continue to innovate and provide sustainable solutions for a cleaner future.
This Global Recycling Day, we encourage everyone to reflect on their waste habits and take actionable steps towards a more sustainable future.
