Bywaters Works with Sky TV to Combat Ocean Plastic

Last Tuesday, Sky TV unveiled an eye catching 10-metre whale made out of plastic waste, and Bywaters is very pleased to have contributed the materials used to make the sculpture.

The plastics used to make the whale, which will now go on a tour of the UK, were collected from beach cleans carried out by Bywaters and our clients in the South East as well as from business and household waste from East London – sorted at our state-of-the-art Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Bow.

Our Commitment to Fight Ocean Plastic Waste

Bywaters is committed to combatting ocean plastic waste, and this campaign is a fantastic way to raise awareness of an issue of global importance with the help of Sky Ocean Rescue.

The 250kg weight of the whale is significant: it equates to the amount of plastic waste that is poured into our oceans every second. If we keep polluting at this rate, then plastic will outweigh fish in the world’s oceans by 2050 – whcih is why Bywaters is committed to act now.

Bywaters’ staff are delighted to be involved in this campaign to raise awareness of plastic pollution. Siận Glover, our Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, said:

A Great Atmosphere at the Unveiling

Siận, Ed van Reenen (Head of Sustainability) and the Bywaters team joined Sky for the unveiling of the sculpture, and we are excited to see where the campaign goes, while continuing to provide a recycling solution for single-use plastics which are routinely used in society every day.

Our MRF in East London separates out five types of plastic from the dry mixed recycling stream and recycles an impressive 75 million bottles per annum. Bywaters is at the cutting edge of recycling single-use plastics, but we want to put the same effort into preventing their use in the first place.

A Great Campaign Against Single-Use Plastics

We at Bywaters are proud to have provided the plastic waste for this awareness-raising campaign. Ocean plastic pollution is approaching crisis levels, and action needs to be taken now if we are to preserve our planet for future generations.

Everyone can do their bit to reduce their use of plastics – from buying a reusable water bottle to bringing a reusable bag shopping with you. Together we can find solutions to this growing problem and ensure that the oceans are reserved for real whales, rather than plastic ones.
