Bywaters had an extremely successful evening at this year’s Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management, being crowned ‘Plastics Recycling Business of the Year’ at a ceremony on the 9th of May.
We faced tough competition in the category, as more and more companies are making strong commitments to tackle plastic pollution – which is fantastic news. Bywaters emerged victorious from a shortlist of three finalists on the night.
What are the Awards for Excellence?
The Awards for Excellence are held annually in order to celebrate the achievements made by individuals and organisations across the recycling, reuse, and waste reduction industries. Categories range from ‘Recycling Business of the Year’ to ‘Local Authority Recycling Champion’ and ‘Collection Crew of the Year’.
The awards serve as a valuable opportunity to reward and raise awareness about the positive strides that have been made over the past year to increase recycling rates and promote environmental sustainability.
Hosted by Masterchef presenter Gregg Wallace, the 2019 Awards for Excellence took place at the Landmark Hotel on the 9th of May and applauded the operational, technological, and social efforts of the shortlisted nominees.
Bywaters Named ‘Plastics Recycling Business of the Year’
Bywaters won over the judging panel in the ‘Plastics Recycling Business of the Year’ category with a wide-ranging submission, highlighting the work we have done to improve sustainability and reduce plastic use across all areas of our business.
Here’s a small extract from the submission to demonstrate the work for which we were recognised:
“Across 2018 Bywaters has made great strides to become the best plastics recycling business we can possibly be. We’ve installed new equipment in our Materials Recovery Facility to increase the quality of our plastics output, with further upgrades planned to increase capacity, while updates to our reporting technology mean that our customers are better cared for than ever.
“Furthermore, we have completely eliminated single-use plastics from our headquarters, and partnered with Sky Ocean Rescue to build Plasticus the Whale, raising awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans. For this, Bywaters won a Planet Mark Award for ‘Best Sustainability Campaign’.”
Bywaters’ staff Get Deserved Recognition
Being presented with this award represents the culmination of a concerted effort across the whole business – from social awareness to office practices to MRF operations – to counteract the effects of plastic pollution and do our part for the environment.
Associate Director Mark Harbard reserved special praise for Sian Glover and Edward van Reenen for their inspirational work in this field over the past year. We’re very proud of all of their efforts, and it was fantastic to see their – and all our staff’s – work rewarded.
